There’s nothing worse than getting a breakout except when the breakout leaves an annoying scar. The first step to preventing a scar is preventing a breakout in the first place. Here are my tips to prevent and reduce the appearance of acne scarring:
+ Make sure you have a good skincare routine that includes thoroughly cleansing your makeup off each night. Cleansers containing salicylic acid are particularly great for dissolving pore clogging oil and skin cells.
+ Avoid picking or popping as this can traumatize the skin, prolonging healing of the blemish.
+ Try eliminating cow’s dairy, excess sugar and processed foods as these foods can cause inflammation and acne to flare up.
Reduce the appearance of scarring:
+ Include skin brightening ingredients such as vitamin C, kojic acid licorice, and niacinimide- (an ingredient that can also help alleviate acne) in your serums and moisturizers.
+ Use AHA’s (alpha hydroxy acids) and or a retinol twice a week before bed to brighten and prevent future blemishes. As tempting as it can be to layer acne treatments, you’ll only end up drying out your skin causing flakiness or worse, a burn.
+ Protect skin daily with spf so dark spots do not darken from sun exposure.
Try not to fret too much, discoloration from dark marks will usually fade over time and these treatments have helped many of my clients (myself included!).
